BE CAREFUL – Student Loses Life Bench Pressing 315lb – Warning

A 22-year-old student from Iowa died after he lost his grip on a 315lb weight barbell while doing a bench press. The weight fell and crushed his neck killing him instantly.

A spokesman for the gym, Mark Yontz, said: “Kyle Thomson was bench-pressing 315lbs (142kg) when the barbell slipped.”

He was taken by ambulance to hospital and pronounced dead there.

Thoughts go out to his family. If anything can be learned it’s to ALWAYS make sure you have a spotter when bench pressing heavy weights, and of course ensure you are able to maintain a controlled and safe grip throughout.
