I'm going to talk about probably one of the most unusual bulking strategies that I've actually tried

in order for me to gain more calories into my diet. The gallon of milk a day diet or the Go Mad diet

or somebody who's really skinny and wants to add some muscle to your frame in a short period of time

Now, I'm not going to tell you whether or not you should or shouldn't do it. I'm just going to give you my experience with it and let you decide if it's something that you yourself want to try

So the basics of the Go Mad diet is simple. You drink a gallon of whole, full fat milk every day in addition to your regular intake of food

That's pretty much it. And that's assuming that your regular intake of food is somewhat balanced

I did the Go Mad diet about eight years ago for a month straight. I wouldn't say I was super skinny at the time

But my situation was I was struggling to get in enough calories per day in order for me to bulk up and add muscle to my frame which is what I wanted to do at the time My work schedule at the time was crazy It didn really allow me the time or the space to prepare or heat up pre meals all the time

And I didn't have the money to buy food every day. We all know how expensive eating out can be

So I was in a tricky situation. I was trying to think of ways to stick to a certain amount of calories per day consistently while still maintaining my work schedule

And that's how I came across an article which was talking about the idea of drinking a whole gallon of milk a day

When we look closely what's actually in milk, a gallon of whole full fat milk gives you around 2,400 calories

130 grams of fat, 187 grams of carbs, and a whopping 123 grams of protein

So it made sense at the time for me to do this. I'm 6'5 and according to my calculations at the time

the amount of calories I needed to hit per day if I wanted to bulk up was 3,800 calories

So already you can see what I was up against. In order to hit that amount of calories from normal food

while doing the work hours that I was doing was just unrealistic for me

A lot of the time, taller people struggle to add muscle to their frame for this very reason

The amount of calories that we need is going to be more than somebody of a shorter stature which leads a lot of people down the road of dirty bulking which isn something I recommend at all But a lot of people do do it and in the long term the results can be really bad for you

So let's look at how I actually did the Go Mad Diet. What I did was I split it up into eight pints throughout the day

What you'll notice right away is two, maybe three things. The first thing you'll notice is that you're going to be going to the toilet a lot more

I had to make sure that when I drank each pint, I wasn't going to be anywhere that would be too far away from access to a toilet

I didn't do any super long car journey. Second thing you'll notice, the milk bloat is very real

After about two days, my stomach got really bloated. But I knew the cause and I just powered through it

The third thing you might notice is that milk can really make you sleepy. The casein in milk or the casomorphine, which comes from the digestion of cow's milk, can really make you tired

I was feeling really sleepy every day. I was like a zombie. You know, that feeling after you've had a really big meal after maybe your Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner, it was like that all the time

All of those things aside, after about a week of drinking this milk, people

who knew me started to tell me that they could see my body changing and I wish I had some photos to share with you of the time of how big I looked but people were

telling me in my face did really get noticeably wider and I really did see a difference on the scales My workouts did suffer a bit I was still able to lift my weights five times a week and get good workouts in but that sleepy bloated feeling kind of did mess up my energy levels again

Also worth noting my fridge at home looked crazy, it was just full of milk and after a while

the sight of milk just started to make me feel sick. After doing the months I had enough

I had to stop. But did it work as a bulking strategy? Technically it does work but I wouldn't recommend

it. Why? Because eating normal food is just so much better. Since then I've learned

I've learned a lot about bulking up for the body type that I have as a taller guy

and I've found much better ways to get more calories in every day as a hard gainer
