Thinking about bladderwrack?
I’ve taken it since making my video. The one I used isn’t sold anymore, so here’s what I’d pick now, depending on what you want it for.
Before you try it
- It’s very high in iodine, which affects your thyroid. Check with your doctor first.
- Don’t take it if you have an overactive thyroid,or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
- How much is too much? For adults, the upper limit for iodine is 1,100 mcg a day from everything combined (NIH).
- Don’t stack it with other iodinelike kelp or a multivitamin with iodine. Sea moss has iodine too, so it all counts towards that limit.
Here are my current picks
If you already take sea moss
-
Forest Leaf Sea Moss + Burdock & Bladderwrack
Sea moss and bladderwrack in one capsule, so you’re not taking both separately. USDA Organic, with 300 mg of bladderwrack per serving.

If you make your own sea moss gel
-
Starwest Botanicals Organic Bladderwrack Powder
A lot of you add bladderwrack to your own sea moss gel or smoothies. This is USDA Organic, and the powder blends straight in. A little goes a long way: the label’s serving is just 1/2 tsp.

If you want it as a source of iodine
-
Nature’s Way Bladderwrack
It tells you exactly how much iodine you’re getting: 151 mcg per capsule, about a full day’s worth. Most bladderwrack products don’t tell you.
