What Are Thigh Gaps All About?

The theory of thigh gaps is pretty straightforward.

When a woman stands with her feet together, there is sometimes a gap between her thighs.

While women all over the world are obsessing about this minuscule space between their legs, it is important to note that thigh gaps are rare. Like really rare.

Only about 5% of the female population has this sought-after gap.

Regardless of its rarity, thigh gaps have become the latest body trend, launching hysteria among females of all ages.

There are even blogs fully devoted to this gap. Look to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and you will find many groups and pages about this trend.

So, why as a society, have we become so obsessed over this body feature?

So, Why Are People So Obsessed Over Thigh Gaps?

Some women, especially those in the teen to young adult bracket, are obsessing over thigh gaps.

The Truth About Thigh Gaps - Do Thigh Gaps Matter?

Unfortunately, the topic of thigh gaps is leading to a scary trend.

Many women equate the pinnacle of perfect body weight to having a thigh gap, and this is simply not true.

The reason you will likely never have a thigh gap, no matter your weight, is because gaps are not based on weight at all.

They are based on your bone structure. Thanks, genes!

Truthfully, 95% of the female population will never see a thigh gap, even if they are a size zero.

If you have hips that are narrow and your bones are angled inward, you are more likely to have a thigh gap than a woman who has wider hips and an outward bone angle.

No matter how much you diet or exercise, you are not going to be able to achieve a thigh gap, unless your bone structure allows it.

So, why are so many women trying to achieve the unachievable?*

Are Thigh Gaps Genetic?

If you do not have a thigh gap, you can blame it on the genes given to you by your mom and dad.

Your bone structure determines whether you will have a thigh gap, and there is literally nothing you can do about it whatsoever.

According to Dr. Travis Stork, thigh gaps are simply a genetic phenomenon that is purely based on bone structure.

It is normal for a woman to have inner thigh fat.

No matter how many thigh workouts you do, that gap may never reveal itself because of your bones.

Although there is nothing wrong with having a thigh gap, it should not be the focus of women who mistakenly believe they are less sexy or fit because their inner thighs touch.

As a society, it is sad that so much focus is placed on this minuscule part of a woman’s body.

So, if you are a woman without a thigh gap, just remember this. Those women who do have them did nothing, absolutely nothing, to get them.

This is not an achievement any more than being born with naturally pouty lips.

Do Guys Find Thigh Gaps Attractive?

Are men just as obsessed with thigh gaps as women? Of course not!

Yes, some men find thigh gaps attractive, but there are many more who could not care less if your thighs touch or not.

Some even find thigh gaps unattractive.

If your partner is focused solely on your thigh gap or lack thereof, it may be time to evaluate your relationship.

Guys find the following more attractive in women than any few centimeters gap between your thighs.

  • Most guys love a woman who is witty and intelligent. No matter how good you look, being able to carry on an intelligent conversation is more meaningful.
  • Can you make him laugh? Men, just like women, feel more comfortable around people who have a solid sense of humor.
  • Confidence is highly attractive in women. Guys like a woman who is confident in who she is, no matter her physique.
  • Guys also love goal-oriented women. Women who know what they want and go out and get it are very attractive to men who pursue the same.

Do Thigh Gaps Matter?

If you have one, great! Do not be ashamed! If you do not, do not be ashamed!

Thigh gaps simply do not matter in the grand scheme of things, no matter who says otherwise.

Instead of focusing on this non-existent thigh space, place your full focus on getting healthy.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your health and body, but you must see things from the right perspective.

Who really cares if you have a thigh gap or not?

Is it going to change your life if you have one?

Is the world suddenly going to come into perfect alignment and make everything in your life grand?

Of course not! So, why are you focusing so hard on something you likely cannot achieve and that will not make a difference in your life?

Instead, focus on the achievable and life-changing goals you should.

Are Thigh Gaps Healthy?

Have you set a fitness goal of developing a thigh gap and found no matter how hard you work at chiseling your body, it just doesn’t happen?

If so, you are not alone. Women all over the world are putting pressure on themselves to achieve their thigh gap goal.

When addressing thigh gaps, you must realize they are NOT a sign of physical fitness. There is no health benefit whatsoever of having a gap between your thighs.

  • Thigh gaps do not make you stronger.
  • Thigh gaps do not improve your heart health.
  • Thigh gaps do not make you more attractive.
  • Thigh gaps do not make your clothes fit better.
  • Thigh gaps do not speak of what kind of person you are.

Those who equate physical fitness to thigh gaps are doing women all over the world a great disservice.

We have women starving themselves and exercising to the extreme level to attempt to achieve something they never will.

Do not put your body through torture and your health in harm’s way over something so trivial.

Instead, focus on true physical fitness by eating a healthy and balanced diet, exercising, and getting restful sleep.

If you want to lose weight, focus on safely reducing your caloric intake each day.

A calorie deficit will help you lose weight at a slow and natural pace of about one to two pounds a week.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is also a sound approach to losing weight. IF has been proven to burn fat.

There are different approaches to IF, including one meal a day (OMAD) and 16:8 (Fasting for 16 hours and eating in a window of 8 hours.)

Though fasting is incredibly safe for most people, consult your doctor if you are underweight, under 18, diabetic, or have certain heart conditions.

While having a thigh gap does not offer any health benefit, it also does not have any negative effects on your health.

A thigh gap is just natural for some people because of their bone structure. Period. If you have a thigh gap, it does not mean you are unhealthy or too skinny.

If you do not have one, it does not mean you are too fat!

Can a Thigh Gap Disappear?

Those women who have thigh gaps seem to be highly concerned with the prospect of losing them.

Some women will not even weight train because they are afraid too much muscle growth will fill in their gap.

It is important to note that added fat and muscle could close the gap. That is just the simple truth. But why should you care?

As stated above, it is normal for women to have some fat deposits on their inner thighs. If you are concerned about having overly thick thighs, targeted exercises and cardio workouts can chisel them but do not become obsessed.

Yes, gaining thigh muscle can close the gap, but it is a fair tradeoff because your legs will look amazing. Most importantly, you will be stronger!

Conclusion – Do Thigh Gaps Matter?

If you are basing your self-worth on whether you have a thigh gap, please stop. Thigh gaps are a craze right now that will likely die with all the other crazy fads that have descended upon the earth.

Just be your amazing self and stop obsessing over such trivial matters. In reality, only a few women have a thigh gap, and they did nothing special to achieve it because it comes from genetics.

Once you stop focusing on such a small matter, you will be able to better embrace who you are. There is nothing wrong with just being you!
